What I’ve Learned from 20+ Years of Supplying Cycle Shelters Across the UK

What I've Learned from 20+ Years of Supplying Cycle Shelters Across the UK

By Mans Khan, Owner of Tamstar Ltd

Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with schools, businesses, hospitals, local authorities and commercial organisations across the UK, helping them create safer, more practical outdoor spaces through the supply and installation of bike shelters.

When I first started the company, cycle shelters were often viewed as nothing more than somewhere to park a bike. Today, they’re an essential part of workplace wellbeing, sustainability strategies, active travel initiatives and modern school facilities. I’ve seen first-hand how the right cycle shelter can encourage more people to cycle, improve security, reduce maintenance costs and even enhance the appearance of a site.

Looking back over 20+ years in the business, there are a number of lessons I’ve learned that continue to shape how we work with every customer today.

Every Site Is Different

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming there is a “standard” cycle shelter that suits every location.

Every project starts with different requirements.

A primary school has very different priorities compared to an NHS hospital. An office development in London faces different challenges to a manufacturing site in Manchester.

Some organisations need to maximise bicycle capacity in a limited space, while others prioritise aesthetics, security or future expansion.

That’s why I always recommend starting with the site requirements rather than selecting the product.

Understanding available space, cyclist numbers, pedestrian routes, vehicle movements and future growth almost always leads to a better long-term solution than simply choosing the cheapest shelter.

Quality Always Wins in the Long Run

Over the years I’ve seen plenty of inexpensive shelters that looked like a bargain initially, but became expensive to maintain after only a few years.

Commercial cycle shelters have to withstand:

  • Heavy daily use
  • Strong winds
  • Rain and snow
  • UV exposure
  • Accidental impacts
  • Occasional vandalism

Choosing durable galvanised steel, quality roofing materials and robust fixings makes a significant difference over the lifespan of the shelter. It may initially cost slightly more upfront, but it often saves organisations thousands of pounds in repairs and replacement later.

Security Is Just as Important as Weather Protection

Many customers initially contact us because they want to keep bicycles dry.

While weather protection is important, security has become one of the biggest priorities.

People are investing more money in their bicycles than ever before, particularly with the growth of electric bikes. Some cycles can cost thousands.

A secure cycle shelter should do more than provide a roof.

It should offer:

  • Secure cycle stands
  • Good visibility
  • Well-lit locations
  • Durable construction
  • Optional mesh panels or enclosed lockable compounds
  • CCTV compatibility where appropriate

When cyclists feel confident their bike will still be there at the end of the day, they’re much more likely to use it regularly.

Schools Continue to Lead the Way

If there’s one sector that’s embraced bike shelters more than any other, it’s education.

We’ve supplied countless cycle shelters or so-called bike sheds to schools throughout the UK, and it’s encouraging to see how many are investing in facilities that promote healthier lifestyles.

Good cycle storage helps schools:

  • Encourage active travel
  • Reduce congestion during drop-off times
  • Improve site organisation
  • Support sustainability goals
  • Protect pupils’ bicycles throughout the year

I’ve also noticed that when schools install attractive, well-positioned cycle shelters, cycling participation often increases because pupils know they’ll have somewhere safe to leave their bikes.

Businesses Are Thinking Differently

Twenty years ago, cycle shelters were rarely included in discussions about workplace wellbeing.

Today they’re becoming part of a much bigger picture.

Many businesses are investing in cycling facilities because they want to:

  • Support employee wellbeing
  • Reduce parking pressure
  • Meet sustainability objectives
  • Encourage greener commuting
  • Improve workplace facilities

Providing secure cycle storage sends a positive message that the organisation values healthier, more sustainable ways to travel.

Refurbishment Often Makes More Sense Than Replacement

One lesson I’ve learned repeatedly is that not every ageing shelter needs replacing.

Many existing cycle shelters still have perfectly sound steel frameworks but suffer from damaged glazing panels, faded coatings or general wear and tear.

Rather than recommending complete replacement, we often advise refurbishment as an alternative solution.

Replacing damaged Perspex, Polycarbonate or PETG glazing panels, recoating the steel framework and carrying out repairs can extend the life of a shelter significantly while costing far less than installing a brand-new structure. It’s also a more sustainable option because much of the original structure remains in use. For more details, contact Fix My Shelter, which is a trading name of Tamstar Ltd.

Planning for Future Growth Saves Money

One piece of advice I often give is to think beyond today’s requirements.

If a business currently has space for ten bicycles but expects to grow over the next few years, it often makes sense to choose a modular cycle shelter design that can be extended later.

The same applies to schools.

As cycling becomes more popular, demand usually increases.

Planning for future expansion from the beginning avoids expensive alterations later.

Customer Service Doesn’t End After Installation

One of the values we’ve built Tamstar on is supporting customers long after a project has been completed.

Whether someone needs replacement glazing panels years later, advice about maintenance or wants to extend an existing shelter, we’re always happy to help.

Many of our customers return because they know they’ll receive ongoing support rather than simply being sold a product.

For me, that’s one of the most rewarding parts of running the business.

Sustainability Has Become a Major Driver

When I first entered this industry, conversations focused mainly on practicality and budget.

Today, sustainability is often one of the first topics customers raise.

Organisations are looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions, encourage active travel and improve their environmental credentials.

Installing high-quality cycle shelters supports these goals by making cycling a more practical and attractive commuting option. Combined with secure cycle parking, many organisations find they can encourage more employees, students and visitors to choose a bicycle instead of a car.

Choosing the Right Supplier Matters

A good supplier should take time to understand your site, recommend practical solutions rather than the most expensive option and not forget about you after installation.

At Tamstar Ltd, that’s exactly how we’ve always approached every project.

We work with organisations across the UK to supply durable, high-quality cycle shelters, smoking shelters, bespoke shelters and outdoor facilities products that are designed to deliver long-term value. All proudly manufactured in the UK.

Final Thoughts

When I look back over the past two decades, one thing stands out above everything else.

Cycle shelters are no longer just somewhere to park a bicycle.

They’re an investment in people, sustainability, security and the future of an organisation.

Whether I’m working with a village primary school, a nationwide business, an NHS trust or a local authority, the objective is always the same: provide a solution that will still be delivering value many years from now.

The products have evolved, customer expectations have changed, and active travel has become far more important, but one thing hasn’t changed. At Tamstar Ltd, we’re still passionate about helping organisations across the UK create safer, smarter and more sustainable outdoor spaces. We continue to strive to implement new designs with modifications that suit current needs.

If you’re considering installing a commercial cycle shelter, upgrading your bike shelter, improving your cycle storage, or exploring cycle shelter restoration, I’d be delighted to share the experience we’ve gained from more than 20 years in the industry and help you find the right solution for your site.
