My Advice for Businesses Planning Cycle Shelter Projects This Summer

My Advice for Businesses Planning Cycle Shelter Projects This Summer

By Mans Khan, Owner of Tamstar Ltd

Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with businesses, schools, NHS organisations, local authorities and commercial sites across the UK, helping them create practical, durable outdoor facilities that stand the test of time. As Managing Director of Tamstar Ltd, I’ve seen hundreds of cycle shelter projects from initial planning through to installation, and I’ve also seen where things can go wrong when key decisions are rushed or overlooked.

In this article, I’m sharing some of the advice I regularly give to organisations planning new cycle shelter projects. Whether you’re installing cycle parking for the first time or expanding existing facilities, these are the lessons I’ve learned from delivering successful projects across a wide range of sectors.

Why Summer Is the Best Time to Install a Cycle Shelter

From my experience at Tamstar Ltd, summer provides the ideal installation window.

Schools benefit from carrying out work during the holidays when pupils aren’t on site, while businesses often find the drier weather and longer days reduce installation delays and make site access much easier. It also means your new bike shelter is ready before autumn and winter, encouraging staff, students and visitors to continue cycling throughout the year.

Across the UK, organisations continue investing in cycling infrastructure as part of wider sustainability, wellbeing and active travel initiatives. Secure, well-designed cycle parking has become an increasingly important feature of modern workplaces and educational facilities. Government guidance also recommends that cycle parking is convenient, secure, well-lit and located close to building entrances wherever practical.

1. Think About Future Demand — Not Just Today’s

One of the biggest mistakes I see is organisations buying a shelter that’s only large enough for their current number of cyclists.

If you currently have ten employees cycling to work, it’s tempting to install a 10 bike shelter.

But what happens when your Cycle to Work scheme becomes more popular?

What if you recruit more staff?

Or your sustainability strategy encourages more people to leave the car at home?

I’ve lost count of the number of customers who have contacted us a year or two later wishing they had installed a slightly larger shelter.

My advice is simple:

Always plan for future growth.

A modest increase in shelter size during the initial installation is usually far more cost-effective than extending or replacing the shelter later.

2. Choose the Right Location

A cycle shelter is only effective if people actually use it.

I always advise customers to consider:

  • Close proximity to the main entrance
  • Good natural surveillance
  • Well-lit locations
  • Easy access without unnecessary obstacles
  • Enough space to manoeuvre bicycles comfortably

If cyclists have to wheel their bikes across a large site or through service yards, many simply won’t bother.

Government active travel guidance similarly recommends placing cycle parking where it is convenient, visible and easy to access, while ensuring it does not obstruct pedestrian routes.

3. Don’t Focus on Price Alone

Everyone has a budget, and I completely understand that. However, when comparing quotations, I always encourage customers to compare much more than the headline price.

Ask yourself:

  • Is the framework fully galvanised?
  • Is the powder coating suitable for long-term outdoor use?
  • What roofing material is supplied?
  • Can replacement panels be sourced years later?
  • Is nationwide installation included?
  • Does the supplier offer after-sales support?

A quality commercial cycle shelter should last for many years with minimal ongoing maintenance.

Paying slightly more upfront can often save thousands in repairs or replacement over the shelter’s lifetime.

4. Think About Security From Day One

Protecting bicycles is often the primary reason organisations invest in cycle shelters.

That’s why I recommend considering security from the outset rather than as an afterthought.

Depending on your site, this could include:

  • Sheffield cycle stands
  • Lockable cycle compounds with lockable gates
  • Mesh side panels
  • CCTV coverage
  • Access control systems
  • Security lighting

For city centre offices or higher risk locations, enclosed cycle storage compounds can provide an additional level of protection and peace of mind.

5. Consider How the Shelter Fits Your Site

Every organisation is different.

Schools often prioritise capacity and durability.

Office developments may want something that complements a modern building.

Industrial sites might need larger shelters designed for heavier daily use.

At Tamstar, we spend time understanding how the shelter will actually be used before recommending a solution.

Choosing the correct size, roof style, colour and configuration creates a shelter that looks like it belongs on your site rather than appearing as an afterthought.

6. Don’t Forget Accessibility

Modern cycle parking isn’t just about standard bicycles anymore.

Cargo bikes, adapted cycles and e-bikes are becoming increasingly common.

Current guidance recommends allowing space for non-standard cycles as part of overall provision wherever possible.

Thinking about accessibility now helps future-proof your investment while making cycling more inclusive.

7. Ask About Installation Requirements Early

Another area that’s often overlooked is the installation itself.

Before ordering a shelter, it’s worth checking:

  • Ground conditions
  • Existing services underground
  • Concrete base requirements
  • Vehicle access
  • Crane access if required
  • Working hours on site

By discussing these details early, we can usually avoid unnecessary delays once installation begins.

8. Consider Long-Term Maintenance

Even the highest-quality shelter benefits from occasional maintenance.

I always recommend choosing a supplier who can continue supporting you after installation.

This includes:

  • Replacement glazing panels
  • Roof repairs
  • Additional bays
  • Replacement cycle racks
  • Shelter refurbishment or restoration services

At Tamstar, we’ve helped many organisations extend the life of their existing shelters through refurbishment rather than complete replacement, providing a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.

9. Think About Sustainability

Many businesses now have clear environmental targets.

Installing secure cycle parking encourages employees to choose active travel instead of driving, helping reduce congestion and emissions while supporting staff wellbeing.

A well-designed commercial bike shed also demonstrates your organisation’s commitment to sustainability, something that’s increasingly valued by employees, customers and stakeholders alike.

10. Choose an Experienced Supplier

Finally, my biggest piece of advice is to work with an experienced supplier that understands your sector.

Every project is different.

A primary school has very different requirements from an NHS hospital, distribution centre or corporate office.

At Tamstar Ltd, we’ve worked with organisations across the UK for over two decades, supplying cycle sheltersbike compoundssmoking shelters and outdoor facility solutions tailored to each site. We always begin by understanding how the space will be used so we can recommend a practical, durable solution rather than simply selling a product.

Final Thoughts

If I could leave you with one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t think of a cycle shelter as just somewhere to park bicycles.

Think of it as a long-term investment in your workplace, your employees, your visitors and your organisation’s future.

The best cycle shelter projects are carefully planned from the beginning. By considering capacity, security, accessibility, durability and future growth, you’ll create a facility that delivers value for many years while supporting healthier, more sustainable travel.

If you’re planning a cycle shelter installation this summer, I’d always recommend starting the conversation early. It gives you more time to assess your site, compare options and ensure everything is ready for installation during the best weather.

At Tamstar Ltd, we’re always happy to share our experience and help businesses, schools and public sector organisations choose the right commercial cycle shelter for their needs. With the right advice and planning, your investment will continue delivering benefits long after summer has ended.
